In 1830, when a newspaper reported she was to be broken up, a twenty-one-year-old Oliver Wendell Holmes answered with a poem, and the outcry is credited with keeping her. In September 1897, a hundred years old and long out of service, she was towed from the Portsmouth Navy Yard to Boston for her centennial.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eTurner's The Fighting Temeraire, 1839, shows a ship of the line that fought at Trafalgar being towed up the Thames by a steam tug to be broken up for timber. He painted the old ship pale and ghostly and the little tug black, and put the sunset where the ship was going. It hangs in London's National Gallery, a few rooms from Rain, Steam and Speed.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe Thames becomes Boston Harbor and the Temeraire becomes the Constitution, three masts bare, black hull banded white along the gun deck, riding light on still water at the left. A small black tug leads her by a line, trailing smoke back over her rigging. The sunset takes up the whole right half of the picture, red and gold down to a low sun over the city, where a church spire stands against it. High on the left, where Turner also put one, a thin new moon.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe Temeraire went to the breakers. This ship did not, and the difference was a page of verse.
