A thousandth of a second at the plate, and No. 715

The home run most Americans can place happened on April 8, 1974, in Atlanta. Hank Aaron of the Braves had tied Babe Ruth's record of 714 four days earlier in Cincinnati. In the home opener at Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium he hit number 715 off the Dodgers' Al Downing and became baseball's all-time home run leader. He finished with 755, and the record stood until 2007.

Every home run is a smaller version of that moment. Contact between bat and ball lasts about a thousandth of a second, and what the crowd sees afterward is the long arc that follows.
