★ The American Rodeo ★

Eight seconds, one hand, and a bull that is scored too

Bull riding comes down to eight seconds. A rider grips a braided rope with one hand, and the free hand must stay off the bull, the rope and his own body, or the ride is disqualified.

A score out of 100 follows, with up to 50 points for the rider's control and balance and up to 50 for the bull's power and agility. The bull is scored even when the rider is thrown, so a good bull is worth something in its own right.

Rodeo as Americans know it has Mexican roots: bull riding descends from charreada contests and spread through the ranches of Texas and California.

The picture is all motion. A bull with pale horns drops its head and kicks its hindquarters high, tail whipping over its back, while the rider in a yellow shirt and wide-brimmed hat holds on at the top of the picture. There is no arena and no crowd, only swirling cobalt, ember orange and gold that carry the spin.

Important time to show support for our country

My office has slowly turned into an American museum. I started with the Iwo Jima painting, but now I've got a full wall of historical American posters. Quality is great and easy to hang.
