The Tetons rise straight off the valley floor with no foothills to soften them, which is why first light hits the summits while the river below is still in shadow. This is the view from the Snake River bend in late September, when the cottonwoods along the water turn and the morning mist sits in the channel. The whole effect lasts under an hour, then flattens out into ordinary daylight.
