Allegiance to the Flag — detail of the artwork
★ The Pledge of Allegiance ★

Written for schoolchildren in 1892, revised three times since

Francis Bellamy, a Baptist minister and editor, wrote the Pledge for The Youth's Companion, a family magazine, which published it in September 1892 for schools marking the 400th anniversary of Columbus's voyage.

The first version read: “I pledge allegiance to my Flag and the Republic for which it stands: one Nation indivisible, with Liberty and Justice for all.” In 1923 “my Flag” became “the Flag of the United States,” and in 1924 “of America” was added. Congress added “under God” on Flag Day, June 14, 1954.

The gesture changed too. The original salute, with the right arm extended, was dropped in 1942, the year Congress wrote the Pledge into the Flag Code, and replaced with the hand over the heart. Under the Flag Code, service members in uniform salute instead.

Here the salute is the whole picture: an eagle in a World War II-style helmet with a white star, field jacket and web belt, one arm raised to the brim, in front of the Stars and Stripes. Heavy dark outlines and flat browns and tans give it the look of an old recruiting print.

Important time to show support for our country

My office has slowly turned into an American museum. I started with the Iwo Jima painting, but now I've got a full wall of historical American posters. Quality is great and easy to hang.
