When Lee withdrew on the fourth, some 50,000 men were dead, wounded, captured or missing, the largest toll of any battle ever fought on the continent. That November Lincoln came to dedicate a cemetery on Cemetery Hill and spoke for about two minutes. The town went back to sleep beneath the same sky.

Vincent van Gogh painted The Starry Night in June 1889 from memory and from the window of the asylum at Saint-Rémy; it hangs in the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Its idea is a sky that moves. The stars spin, the moon burns, and a dark cypress rises the full height of the canvas to hold the whole turning thing to the ground.

The cypress becomes a monument: a stone column at the left with a lone soldier on top, black against the spirals. The stars are here in their halos of light, and the crescent moon in the upper right corner burns hottest of all. Below the sky the field runs out to a rail fence with cannon standing along it, then the town, three steeples, lamplit windows, and a line of blue hills. Parliament had answered the destruction of the tea with the Coercive Acts, closing the harbor on 1 June and stripping Massachusetts of its charter government; General Gage landed regiments to enforce them. The town responded by organizing. Committees of correspondence carried news to every county, the Suffolk Resolves called for arms and drill, and militia companies across the province began training in earnest. The war was over and the army all but disbanded. He filled a glass, drank to them, and asked each man to come and take his hand; Henry Knox went first, and by most accounts no one in the room was dry-eyed. Then he walked to the wharf, crossed by barge, and rode to Annapolis to resign his commission.

Leonardo's Last Supper, finished in Milan in 1498, is not a picture of a meal but of a moment: the instant a room hears something it did not expect, and the reaction runs down the table like a wave. The officers turn toward him in clusters: at his left one half rises with an open hand, another buries his face in his palm, and at the far end a man stands. A soldier in a fringed hunting shirt sits among the epaulets. For the next century she stood in for the nation on coins, in cartoons, on the dome of the Capitol and at the head of parades: a young woman in classical dress, often in a liberty cap, arriving from elsewhere and belonging here at once.

Sandro Botticelli painted The Birth of Venus in Florence around 1485, and it hangs in the Uffizi. Turner painted Rain, Steam and Speed in 1844, when he was sixty-nine and the railway was barely a decade old; it hangs in the National Gallery in London. Twenty men took to three open whaleboats. Owen Chase, the first mate, was picked up with two others by the brig Indian on 18 February 1821, ninety days later. The painting hangs in the Louvre. Its lasting idea is the pyramid: bodies heaped at the base, the living climbing over them, and one man at the apex signaling a ship almost too small to see.

The raft becomes a whaleboat, its sail in rags on a leaning mast at the left. A dead man lies across the bow in a shipmate's arms. A quadrant and a barrel roll in the bilge. Everything in the boat leans toward that sail.

Melville read Chase's narrative at sea in 1841 and cited it by name in Moby-Dick. On the night of 25 December, in a northeaster of sleet and snow, Durham boats and ferries carried them over the ice-choked Delaware at McConkey's Ferry. The crossing ran three hours late and the two supporting columns never got over at all. The army marched nine miles through the dark and struck the Hessian garrison at Trenton after eight that morning, taking nearly nine hundred prisoners.

Rembrandt painted The Storm on the Sea of Galilee in 1633, his only seascape. It hung in the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston until 1990, when it was stolen, and its frame still hangs empty there. The boat climbs a wave on a steep diagonal, a break in the cloud throws light on the straining sail and a handful of faces, and everything else is left to the dark.

The boat rises out of the lower right on Rembrandt's diagonal, bow toward the light. Washington stands right of center in a dark cape over buff and blue, looking ahead into the weather, a furled flag behind his shoulder. Ice piles up in the foreground, sleet streaks everything, and the only light comes from a torn cloud at the upper left.

Leutze gave the crossing a sunrise and a standing hero. Booth has landed badly on the boards behind the footlights, one hand flat, the knife still up, looking back at what he has done. The Statue of Liberty had been dedicated on 28 October 1886, six years before the station opened, and for the passengers coming in from the Narrows it was the first thing in the harbor that did not move. People who made that crossing described the moment for the rest of their lives.

Katsushika Hokusai made Under the Wave off Kanagawa around 1831 as the first sheet of his Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji; impressions of the woodblock print are in collections from New York to London. Its idea is scale turned inside out: an enormous, clawed wave about to fall on three fishing boats, and behind it, tiny and unbothered, the mountain that will still be there when the wave is gone.

Fuji becomes the Statue of Liberty, small and green on her pedestal near the center of the sheet, with the low line of Manhattan running off to the right. Hokusai's fishing boats become two harbor ferries, their decks black with passengers in dark coats and hats, one pitched steeply into the trough at the left and one riding the far swell. The wave keeps its Prussian blue, its fingers of foam and its flat tan sky. Everything in the picture is moving except the one thing the passengers are looking at.

Hokusai's point was that the mountain outlasts the sea. The forms reached Valley Forge that spring, at the end of a winter that had cost the army roughly two thousand men to cold, hunger and disease. Washington signed his own oath on 12 May 1778, and through May the officers took theirs in turn, a few days after the camp had paraded to celebrate the alliance with France.

Jacques-Louis David painted the Oath of the Horatii in Rome in 1784 and showed it at the Paris Salon the following year; it hangs in the Louvre. Three brothers stretch their arms toward the swords their father holds up, swearing to fight for Rome, while the women of the house collapse in grief at the right. Its severity, three arches, one light source, no ornament, made it the founding picture of Neoclassicism.

Here the three arches are gray stone and the light falls from the upper left across a flagged floor. Three young officers in blue and buff stand shoulder to shoulder, heads bowed, right hands on their hearts, hats under their arms. Washington faces them at the center, three bare blades raised in his left hand, his right lifted as if administering the words. At the right two women and a boy sit close on a bench, eyes down, the boy holding a fife across his knees. The blades are the brightest thing in the picture.

David built this arrangement to show what resolve costs, and who pays. Lee surrendered the Army of Northern Virginia to Ulysses S. Grant. The terms took Grant a few minutes to write. Officers kept their side arms, men who owned their horses kept those, everyone was paroled and sent home, and Grant ordered rations sent across the lines. Lee kept his sword. Behind them a wall of upright lances gives the painting its Spanish name, Las Lanzas.

The parlor is traded for the field where the two armies stood. Thomas Jefferson, thirty-three years old, wrote it in about two weeks in rented rooms on Market Street. Then, over 2, 3 and 4 July, the full Congress went through it line by line in the Assembly Room of the Pennsylvania State House, cutting roughly a quarter of the text before adopting it on the evening of 4 July. Most signatures were added on 2 August.

Leonardo da Vinci painted The Last Supper between 1495 and 1498 on the end wall of the refectory of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan, where it remains. Its subject is a sentence: Christ has just said that one of the twelve will betray him. The perspective lines of the room converge on his head, the window behind him serves for a halo, and the apostles break into four agitated groups of three.

Here the room is a plain paneled chamber in Philadelphia green, three tall sash windows and the brick of the city beyond. Jefferson sits at the center against the middle window, red-haired and very still, both hands on the draft. To his right Franklin leans in over his spectacles while a man in a red coat presses a point; to his left the delegates read, confer and object in knots of their own. One candle burns among the pewter tankards. The eye lands on the paper, the only bright thing on the table.

The words were his. By the 1890s it was finished and the city had grown up around it, the Dakota standing over the West Side. Sunday was the one day the city had off, and on a fine one the lawns by the Lake filled with nursemaids, clerks, families and men who had dressed for church and stayed dressed.

Georges Seurat painted A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte between 1884 and 1886; it hangs in the Art Institute of Chicago and is just over ten feet wide. He built it from thousands of small dots of unmixed color, meant to blend in the eye rather than on the palette, and posed his Parisians in strict profile and full face so that a day off looks as solemn as a frieze.

The Seine becomes the Lake and the far bank a row of tall apartment houses. Seurat's couple move to the center, she under a white parasol, he in a top hat with a cane, a girl in white beside them. A nurse pushes a wicker pram at the left, two boys roll hoops, a pair sits on a green bench. In the blue shade of the foreground a man in a straw boater lies back beside a woman bent over her sewing, and a small terrier trots across the grass toward the light.

Seurat froze a Paris crowd into something permanent.
