Sputnik and the Shock
The launch of Sputnik on October 4, 1957 was a crisis for American prestige, security, and self-understanding. At the time of that speech, the total American spaceflight experience consisted of Alan Shepard's 15-minute suborbital flight, completed 20 days earlier. The technology to fulfill Kennedy's promise didn't yet exist. He committed anyway.
The Apollo Program
NASA's Apollo program mobilized 400,000 workers and contractors across the United States. The Saturn V rocket, designed by Wernher von Braun's team, remains the most powerful launch vehicle ever successfully flown. Its development required solving engineering problems that had no precedent — the F-1 engines at its base each produced more thrust than the entire first stage of all existing American rockets combined.
The program nearly ended in tragedy on January 27, 1967, when a cabin fire during a launch pad test killed astronauts Gus Grissom, Ed White, and Roger Chaffee in Apollo 1. Apollo 11
Apollo 11 launched on July 16, 1969. Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins reached lunar orbit on July 19. On July 20 at 4:17 p.m. EDT, the lunar module Eagle touched down in the Sea of Tranquility. Armstrong's words — "The Eagle has landed" — triggered relief and celebration at Mission Control after a tense final descent during which the computer alarm system triggered repeatedly and fuel reserves dropped to seconds. Six hours later, Armstrong descended the ladder and stepped onto the lunar surface. "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind."

Twelve Americans walked on the moon between 1969 and 1972. The Apollo program produced more scientific data about the moon in three years than all previous astronomical study combined. The technologies developed — integrated circuits, memory foam, water filtration, scratch-resistant lenses, cordless power tools — became the foundation of the modern economy.
